MTB Works Trail Ready Kids clothing

Does your kid love mountain biking and want a MTB specific jersey to look the part? Little Pro, a website dedicated to all things kids cycling, has sent us a few bits of kids' mountain bike-specific clothing from MTB Works to put to the test, the Trail Ready Kids Jersey and their matching Trail Ready Padded Shorts.

So why is it necessary to have a mountain bike-specific jersey compared to a usual t-shirt? A technical fabric that wicks sweat away from the skin will keep little cyclists comfortable and cool in warm weather and the long sleeves on this jersey will give a little more protection from overgrown trails, sunshine and reduce grazes should a tumble occur.

MTB Works are described as "specialists in mountain bike clothing, designed specifically for young riders and tested by our own in-house team".

The Trail Ready Kids Jersey is a classic riding jersey cut to fit kids. The Jerseys come in eight sizes to fit kids from 2 to 14 years old and MTB Works offer four colours to appeal to a broad range of tastes.

The Trail Ready jersey is described as being suitable for all types of kids cycling from down-hilling to balance bikes!

MTB Works Trail Ready Kids Jersey in use

With a huge range of sizing it's easy to get one to fit your little rider and the cut has proved to provide a really nice fit with its stretch material. This is another great example of designing around children, rather than shrinking things. These jerseys fitted both kids well, with enough arm length to not expose their wrists when cycling, long enough in the body to avoid gaps around the waist and a slim cut that works well with the stretch fabric. Our 5-year-old tester wore a size small, and 8-year-old tester a size large.

The cut is pretty classic, athletic, and doesn't have a dropped back as found on some cycling tops.

This works great for kids and means it's good for use on any activity, not just bikes and we've used it for running and climbing as a base layer.

The material is a stretch/polyester type and it's soft to the touch but also pretty robust. It's not hugely insulating but cuts the wind well and has been through the washer plenty and dries quickly making it very useful for general wear!

I don't feel that this jersey offers a greater level of performance than any other 'active' t-shirt would do. If you were looking to invest in kids cycling kit I would be focusing on the bike, helmets, gloves or a jacket before cycling-specific tops. However, it's comfortable and fits really well making it ideal for any sport.

Final Verdict

These jerseys fitted our testers brilliantly and there are lots of size and colour choices, including yellow and purple, making it a great option for all-around action wear for your little riders.
