Enjoy cycling with your sprogs this Summer - why not hire a kids bike trailer?

Have you always wanted a kids trailer so you could cycle as a family but didn’t want to commit to a big expense?
For many of us, it doesn’t make sense to go out and buy a brand new kids bike trailer. Kids grow up and out of things so fast. The equipment takes up so much storage space in the garage (that is if you have garage!) and it requires time to invest in maintenance and repairs. It can also be harmful to the planet to buy things unnecessarily.
So, imagine my excitement when an email popped into my inbox telling me all about a NEW kids bike trailer rental scheme! Kids Bike Trailer Hire have launched this Summer to give a new better option…
Now you can access premium Burley Kids Bike Trailers at affordable hire prices with no deposit. No storage, transport hassle or maintenance to worry about.
I knew immediately that this would be something that Cycle Sprog readers would be interested in and within a couple of hours I was on the phone to Sarah hearing all about her existing hire businesses and plans for offering not just short and long term child bicycle trailer hire this summer, but delivery to your holiday destination or home.
Going on holiday? Rent a kid’s bike trailer for the week!
This is one of the features of the rental scheme I really like. They will deliver a Burley Rental Cub bike trailer to your holiday destination address, so you don’t have to worry about the faff of getting a trailer the boot of your car!
I think back to when our two Sprog were of a trailer age, and how useful this service would have been. There were a number of holidays where we’d have loved to take our bikes on our car rack and ridden with the boys in a trailer. However there was no way we could fit our own trailer in the boot of our car along with all our holiday kit.
On occasions we ended up hiring bikes and seats which worked out a lot more expensive for a single day of fun. Have you seen the extortionate prices holiday parks charge for day hire!! For a standard days trailer hire at a venue, kids bike trailer hire offer you 7 days hire for the same price.
Why risk buying and only using it a few times? The ultimate try before you buy!
Test out the Burley Bee for a few weeks before committing to purchase.
You can rent the Burley Bee kids bike trailer for a minimum of 1 week through to a maximum of 12 weeks. At the end of the rental period you can decide to send the trailer back, extend your rental period, or buy the trailer. Prices start from £35 per week, plus delivery charges (if you're not picking up in person).
I think this is a brilliant idea and I would have really appreciated being able to test out a quality trailer on our daily commute, and would have probably realised instantly the difference all the added features make compared to the cheap and flimsy trailer we started out with.
What children’s bike trailers are available to rent?
Currently, the rental trailers on offer are all made by Burley.
Burley are an American company who have been making bike trailers for over 40 years. They are constantly evolving their products to make them easier to use, more comfortable and even more safe. The trailers have built in roll cage to protect your child, whilst offering a low centre of gravity to help with stability.
Kids Bike Trailer Hire offer 2 types of bike trailers: Prices start from £35 per week plus delivery,
Burley Rental Cub - available for hire only
- The Burley Rental Cub is an industrial strength bike trailer, that as the name suggests is designed for long term rental use. It is designed to be durable enough for the rigours of long term rentals making it perfect for that holiday getaway.
Burley Bee - available for hire & to purchase
- The Burley Bee is one of the best selling bikes on the market. Now you can rent this iconic trailer and use it on your regular routes to find out whether it's the one for you.
How does delivery and return work?
Obviously the practicalities of the scheme are really important. Kids Bike Trailer Hire are based in Surrey - their co-working office space is in Horley and they have currently have 1 collection hub near Gatwick (a second collection hub in Yorkshire is due to open soon)
If you’re near Surrey you can arrange to pick up and return your trailer in person (saving on delivery costs).
For everyone else signed-for courier delivery within mainland UK can be arranged. The outward delivery charge is £29.99 and you can either use the same service to return the trailer, or arrange your own signed-for courier.
Sarah tells me that about 40% of customers choose to either buy or extend their hire period. Customers usually arrange outbound delivery initially and then book the return delivery, if needed, once people have decided on their longer term plans with the trailer.
Obviously, if you’re using their holiday rental you can arrange your return courier pickup slot at the time of booking.
What age children are the Burley rental trailers suitable for?
The age range for the trailers is 12 months to about 6 or 7 years. Burley’s official advice is
“To ride in a Burley trailer behind a bicycle, the industry standard is to wait until a child is one year old. While each child’s physical development is unique, we recommend that a child should be able to sit upright unattended and hold his or her head up while wearing a bicycle helmet. Please check with your pediatrician if you are in doubt about your child’s neck strength.”
This does mean bike trailer rental isn’t an option if you’ve got a young baby which isn’t able to support its own head yet, and you’ll be asked to sign a disclaimer prior to your order being confirmed.
At the upper age range, then again this does depend on the weight and height of your child. Burley’s advice on this is:
“Children typically are able to ride in the trailer until about age six, or until they become too tall for their helmet to fit below the internal roll bar. The max age will depend on the child’s development. Burley manuals say a maximum age of 7 years old. However, the maximums to consider are more related to the height and weight that a trailer is rated to accommodate. All Burley kid trailers have the same maximum height recommendation of 41.25 inches. The weight capacity for a double trailer is 100lbs. The recommended max weight per child is 40lbs.”
To convert to metric - 40lb is just about 18kg and 100lb is 45kg. 41.25 inches is 104.7cm.
Of course, all this depends on whether you’re fit enough to haul 45kg behind you!!!
Can I rent a Burley Snuggler for a younger passenger?
Yes! For the comfort of children at the lower age range you can rent the Burley Snuggler for use with the Burley Bee (but not the Rental Cub).
Burley’s advice is “The Snuggler may be used for towing your child behind your bicycle if your child may sit upright unattended while wearing a bicycle helmet” and advise a minimum age of 12 months.
The Snuggler can be rented either as part of a Burley Bee trailer hire, or individually if you want to try out with your own trailer.
How do I know whether the Burley trailer I’m renting will fit to my specific bike?
This is where the personal service of a small business comes to the fore.
Sarah the founder, set up her first rental business,Tri Wetsuit Hire three years ago. Wetsuits come in all shapes & sizes and so she knows the importance of customer services and realises not every customer will have the same bike!
Expect to spend some time on the phone with Sarah or her team, speaking to them about your bike so they can check that the trailer is compatible before you confirm your order.
I’m interested in renting a trailer this summer – what do I need to do now?
If, like me, you’re really excited to hear that it’s now possible to rent bike trailers anywhere in mainland UK then you need to check for rental availability for the dates you're interested in here.
We predict that this service will be really popular, especially with more and more families seeking to limit their car usage and get out on their bikes more, whether on a permanent basis or just during their holidays. You’d better book early to avoid disappointment!
