Gazelle Cabby, an exciting new addition to the family e-cargo bike market
Gazelle’s new longtail e-cargo bike, the Gazelle Cabby, is an exciting addition to the range of the best electric longtail cargo bikes currently available.
Whether you're taking the kids to school, doing your food shopping, or carting around some extra cargo, carrying kids by bike is much easier with an electric bike. We think the Gazelle Cabby, with its extended rear carrier, could be a great addition to the family e-cargo bike market, capable of carrying just about anything.
About Gazelle
Gazelle is a bicycle brand with a rich heritage dating back to 1892, and has long been renowned in the Netherlands. Known for its commitment to quality, comfort, and innovation, Gazelle has become a leading bicycle manufacturer globally.
Blending classic Dutch design with modern technology, Gazelle offers a diverse range of bikes, including electric bikes, city bikes, and touring bikes. Gazelle bikes are characterised by their upright riding position, ergonomic features, and durable construction, making them ideal for daily commuting, leisurely rides, and long-distance touring.
About the Gazelle Cabby
At Cycle Sprog, we’re big advocates of electric cargo bikes for families, and we’ve spent a decent amount of time examining what’s on offer to determine whether it’s worth investing in or not. So let’s delve a little deeper into what makes the Gazelle Cabby stand out.
Customisable for family riding
The Gazelle Cabby is super versatile and completely customisable. Thanks to the clever MIK system, you can click all kinds of accessories onto the front and rear carrier in no time. If you want to add a crate or basket to the front, it’s easy to do. There’s ample room at the rear to fit one of the best rear bike seats, combined with a caboose for extra protection. Seat cushions can also be added for older riders who don't need a fixed seat.
Safety is a priority for any family doing the school run by bike or cycling around town with their kids. With this in mind, Gazelle has shielded the rear wheel with a protector so that feet and hands are safe from turning wheels. Plus, the Cabby stands securely on a double-leg kickstand, which should make it easy to load up without worrying about stability. When you are ready to ride, the kickstand releases easily with a handy grip under the saddle.
Not just any old longtail
The Gazelle Cabby is built like a normal e-bike, with the front of the bike looking almost identical to Gazelle’s usual e-bikes. With an upright riding position, geometry that feels 'normal', and larger wheels compared to other longtail cargo bikes, it rides more like a regular bike. This means a smoother ride over kurbs, potholes, and bumpy terrain, with better handling and comfort for both rider and passengers.
Power and range for effortless riding
E-bikes make it much easier to get around hilly areas, even when loaded up with cargo. The Gazelle Cabby comes with a powerful Bosch Performance Line CX motor to help you climb with your kids (and maybe the shopping) in tow, with 85 Nm of torque to provide support. There are three battery capacities to choose from: 400, 545, and 800 watt-hours, so there’s a range to suit all needs.
The Gazelle Cabby has an impressive carrying capacity, holding up to 80kg on the rear carrier, 15kg on the front carrier, and a total of 200kg including the rider. This not only means you can stop for the weekly shop in the middle of school run, but also that you can continue to ferry children as they grow bigger, making this a potentially long-term investment.
Premium design and sustainable materials
The Gazelle Cabby is finished to a high standard, featuring hydraulic disc brakes that provide plenty of stopping power in all weather conditions. It also boasts a low-maintenance Enviolo carbon belt drive for smooth and quiet pedalling and easy gear shifting.
Another nice touch is the way sustainability is built into the design: several parts are made from recycled materials, including the frame, as well as the plastic in the chain guard, mudguards, and footboards. Gazelle is on a journey to be carbon neutral in 2050, they are working on a creating a climate-neutral production environment.
Built-in security for peace of mind
E-bikes and cargo bikes can often be targeted by thieves, especially in particularly built-up areas, so it’s good to see that the Gazelle Cabby frame includes a built-in GPS tracking module. This is clearly indicated on the frame, which means it should also serve as a visual deterrent. If the bike moves unexpectedly, an instant alert is sent via the Gazelle Connect app. The first year of the app subscription is free of charge.
Warranty and servicing for the Gazelle Cabby
Gazelle offers up to ten years’ warranty on material and manufacturing defects for the frame. Suspension front forks come with a two-year warranty.
With its many low-maintenance features, servicing the Gazelle Cabby should be easy, with all Gazelle dealers ready to provide expert support when needed. The bikes are hand-built in the Netherlands to an exceptional standard and have been recognised for their design excellence, winning an iF Design Award.
We are excited to review the Gazelle Cabby and test its premium features. With Gazelle’s strong reputation for quality and comfort, we’re looking forward to seeing how this family-focused longtail e-bike performs in real-world use. Emily, Cycle Sprog’s Partnerships and Reviews editor, has spent a week with it so far and has great first impressions! Stay tuned for a family review, coming soon.
