Best kids bike accessories: baskets, bells, bags and more
Whether your child is just starting out or already pedalling confidently, kitting out their bike with some great bike accessories can make a big difference to how much they love cycling. From adding a fun bell so they can make lots of noise, to a Disney Princess basket, or a practical set of panniers for carrying their school bags: the best kids bike accessories can be functional as well as fun.
We understand that when it comes to cycling with kids, it can sometimes be a bit challenging to get them enthused about riding their bike. For some children, even the best kids bikes can take a bit of time to warm to, especially if the weather’s less than ideal or they’re just not feeling up to pedalling that day. Adding some exciting and colourful accessories can help them really fall in love with their bikes, while practical additions can make the school run easier for them, and you.
That’s why we’ve rounded up some of our favourite bike accessories for kids. We’ve split our recommendations into two key areas: practical accessories, which help make cycling easier, safer or more convenient, and fun accessories, which let kids express their personality and make their bikes more exciting.

You’ll find a range of accessories in this guide, from bells, baskets and pannier bags, to streamers, spokey dokeys and handlebar plushies.
We’ve not included lights in this article, as they’re so important they deserve their own guide: check out our best bike lights for kids if you’re looking for safe and effective lighting options.
Looking for helmets?
We’ve got dedicated guides for those too: best kids bike helmets and best bike helmets for babies and toddlers.

These accessories are particularly useful for kids who cycle to school, go on longer family rides, or are beginning to develop independent riding habits.
Whether that’s carrying school bags in waterproof panniers, using a kickstand for easy parking, or adding mudguards to keep the road spray at bay, these are all the functional accessories we’d recommend for your child’s bike to keep their day-to-day cycling manageable.

Buyers guide: best kids bike accessories
Which bike accessories your child wants and needs will always depend on how and where they ride.
For kids cycling to school, we recommend prioritising practical accessories like mudguards, a rack or basket, and a bell.
If they’re just starting out or riding short distances, you might want to keep things simple and fun!
It’s important to strike a balance between what will make their life on the bike easier and what they get excited about, especially if they’re not always the most enthusiastic when it comes to digging the bike out for a ride.
While mudguards will stop them getting wet from puddles, and panniers will make it easy to carry their belongings, will rainbow coloured spokey dokeys or a handlebar plushie light a fire in them and make them excited to get pedalling?
Are bike accessories universal or bike-specific?
Not all accessories fit all bikes, so be sure to check sizing and compatibility, especially for racks, mudguards and kickstands. Some products are designed specifically for smaller kids' frames, while others will be dependent on wheel size.
Mudguards will specify which wheel diameter they’re compatible with. If you’re not sure which wheel size your child’s bike has, you can measure the diameter in inches, or check for the size written on the wall of their tyres.
Can I install these accessories myself?
Many kids bike accessories are easy to fit at home with basic tools, though some (like pannier racks) might require an adult’s help or a visit to your local bike shop. We’ll let you know where each product needs a bit more installation know-how.
Will accessories make the bike heavier?
Most accessories are lightweight, like spokey dokeys and windmills, but some are a lot more substantial, like pannier racks. Plus, adding several at once can make a big difference to the overall weight of the bike, which in turn can translate into a change in how easy it is to manoeuvre, especially for younger or less confident riders.
Generally though, the accessories we recommend are designed for kids to use on their bikes and won’t be so cumbersome that your little one won’t be able to continue riding. We’re listing accessories that we think will make your child love their bike even more, not less.
Are accessories safe for younger children?
Most are, but always check the manufacturer’s recommended age and make sure nothing interferes with safe pedalling or steering.
