Review: Vortex kids cycling gloves – long fingers

UPDATE DECEMBER 2016: PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SAVAGE VORTEX KIDS CYCLING GLOVES HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED. YOU MAY STILL FIND THEM ON SALE IN YOUR LOCAL BIKE SHOPS BUT WE CANNOT FIND ANY TO PURCHASE ON LINE.

Similar alternatives are the Polaris Mini Trail Kids Long Finger Cycling Gloves or the Madison Kids Trail Long Finger Cycling Gloves

My daughter Alice (aged 7) has been asking for some kids size cycling gloves with long fingers to protect her hands if she fell off,  and to give her a bit of extra grip on wet days out. She also wanted some gloves to keep her fingers warmer on the bike than the fingerless cycling gloves we have reviewed previously.

When I showed her the long-fingered Savage Vortex Junior cycling gloves we’d been sent to review she was therefore keen to try them out.

What are the Vortex kids cycling gloves like to use?

Alice’s handspan is 14cm, so I’d ordered the size Youth Medium. These were a tight fit, but not too high on the cuff, so allowed her to flex her wrist.  They fastened easily with a velcro strip, and she can pull them on and off herself.

The Amara palm and stretch ventilated back means these are not a winter cycling glove designed to keep your kids hands warm on very cold days (see the Cycle Sprog article on winter kids cycling gloves if that is what you’re looking for).

As these full-fingered kids cycling gloves are based on the adult size Vortex BMX Full Finger Gloves, they are much more suited to protection and grip across 2 to 3 seasons.

The cycling gloves are breathable, dried out quickly when got wet, offered Alice the extra grip she wanted and did protect her hands (including her fingers) from the wind and the rain during the test period (spring and early summer). An added bonus was that they also wash well.

Alices says “The best bit is the soft material on the thumbs that I can wipe my nose on!”

Where to buy the Savage Vortex Junior cycling glove

The Savage Vortex Junior cycling gloves come in two colours (white/red and black grey), both with the same funky silicon design.
