About our reviewers:
Rebecca and Tom are keen cycling parents who use bikes to explore new places and cut down on car journeys. Tim is both a balance bike enthusiast and a regular rear bike seat passenger.
Until recently, they were a family of three. Tim, now two and a half years old, loves zooming around on his balance bike, often using it to get to nursery in the village. When it’s raining, they switch to “daddy’s big bike”, perhaps not quite as fun, but still a firm favourite.
Tim is also excited about his new sister and is already looking forward to sharing a double trailer with her and going cycle touring next summer.
Hamax brand overview
Hamax is a long-established Norwegian brand specialising in child bike seats, helmets, and bike trailers designed to help families travel safely and comfortably by bike. Known for their focus on ergonomics and durability, Hamax products are widely used by cycling families across Europe.
Their rear bike seat range includes popular models such as the Zenith Relax, which we’ve previously reviewed. It’s a reclining rear seat that impressed us with its comfort and adjustability for growing children.
Read our Hamax Zenith Relax Review for full details.
The rain poncho sits within their accessories range, designed specifically to complement Hamax rear seats and enhance all-weather usability.
First Impressions of the Hamax Bike Seat Rain Poncho
On arrival, the poncho immediately felt like a well-made bit of kit. There’s plenty of elasticity, and the fabric appears durable with a reassuring quality to the stitching and finish.
The initial challenge was persuading Tim to put his head through the relatively small opening, but once familiar with it, this was no longer an issue.
Out and about, it attracts positive comments; most people’s first reaction is: “Ooh, that looks cosy!”
The family have used their original Hamax rain poncho almost daily for around a year and a half (that they bought themselves), before being keen to replace it, Hamax kindly offered one to continue long-term testing for a Cycle Sprog review.
Hamax Bike Seat Rain Poncho specifications

- Full-coverage fit- wraps around both the child and the Hamax rear bike seat with no gaps for draughts or drips.
- Large helmet-friendly hood- designed to fit comfortably over a child’s cycle helmet.
- Integrated stuff pocket- the poncho folds into its own attached pouch with a handle for compact storage.
- Easy on/off design- elasticated hem seals around the underside and back of the seat.
The Hamax Bike Seat Rain Poncho in use
The poncho has been used predominantly for keeping dry and warm on the nursery cycle run. For a full year, this meant around 10 miles of cycling daily for the littl’un – rain or shine, light or dark.
It’s easy to put on and seals neatly with elastic around the base of the seat. This gives excellent coverage, keeping most of the child protected from rain.
The only exposed area is around the neck and head, so on wet days Tim would still wear a jacket, though overtrousers became unnecessary.
Interestingly, what began as a “rainy day tool” quickly became an everyday essential.
The poncho is just as valuable in cold or windy conditions as it eliminates the need to worry about keeping the child's legs, feet and hands warm. As a result, it was used more often than not.
The main criticism of the poncho is the hood.
Despite the small amount of elasticity, it tends to blow off in even a moderate breeze, making it practically useless.
This is an area where we feel Hamax could make a significant improvement.
In terms of durability, the poncho has held up well. After 1.5 years of very regular use, the elastic and waterproofing eventually reached the end of their lifespan – completely understandable given the mileage.
Our review family were not disappointed and simply replaced it with the same model.
As they put it: “Way cheaper than driving the car whenever it’s cold or wet!”
Does the Hamax Bike Seat Rain Poncho fit with other brand rear bike seats?
Whilst the Hamax rain poncho is designed specifically to fit snugly around Hamax rear bike seats, it is also compatible with other rear seats that have a similar shape and mounting position.
As long as your rear bike seat has a backrest and sides for the elasticated hem to grip onto, the poncho should wrap securely and provide good coverage.
While the poncho fit may not be quite as precise as with a Hamax seat, families report success using it across a range of rear seat brands, making it a versatile option if you have a different rear seat.
Does the Hamax Bike Seat Rain Poncho work with frame and rack mounted rear seats?
Yes - the poncho is compatible with Hamax's range of both rack and frame mounted rear seats.
Does the Hamax Rain Poncho fit front bike seats?
The poncho is designed to specifically fit a rear bike seat, which is a lot larger and a different shape to a front seat. If used with a front seat there would be a lot of excess fabric, and no secure fitting to stop it moving around whilst in use. We'd recommend using a regular toddler poncho or waterproofs, together with a windscreen to protect your child on a front seat.
Overall verdict of the Hamax Bike Seat Rain Poncho
This is a brilliant bit of kit designed for daily use. It's not quite perfect, as the hood lets it down. However, we haven’t found anything better, and now we’ve used one, we wouldn’t want to be without it!
It’s vastly superior to a standard poncho not designed for a rear bike seat and provides reliable comfort and protection throughout the year.
We’d 100% recommend purchasing one if you plan to use a rear bike seat when it's raining or cold.
