Are you a mountain biking parent who loves your new bike but can't fit your child's front seat because of internal cable routing?
If you’ve been eyeing up a new mountain bike lately, you may have noticed that more and more brands are choosing to route their brake and gear cables through the headset rather than outside it. This design tweak makes for a cleaner-looking bike and protects the cables from knocks and weather, but it does come with one big drawback: it makes fitting certain child seats a lot trickier.
The headset is the part at the very front of your bike where the fork meets the frame. On bikes with internal headset cable routing (ICR), the cables run right through this section. That means traditional child bike seat mounts, which usually clamp to the stem or replace headset spacers, can’t be fitted in the normal way without getting tangled up with the cables.
That’s where Kids Ride Shotgun comes in. They’re well known for their range of front-mounted MTB child seats, which put little ones in the best seat in the house, right up front with mum or dad. We’ve previously tested the original Shotgun seat and shared our first impressions of the Shotgun Pro EVO, and both reviews show just how much fun these seats can bring to family rides.
Until now, though, parents with bikes with internally routed cables haven’t been able to use the Pro seat. But with the launch of their brand-new ICR Adapter Kit, that’s no longer a problem.
Kids Ride Shotgun Launch Shotgun Pro ICR Adapter Kit – Expanding Compatibility for Modern MTB Setups
Kids Ride Shotgun has launched their new ICR Adapter Kit, designed to unlock compatibility for their Pro and Pro EVO seats on bikes with internal headset cable routing — a setup that previously prevented installation.
The kit includes a new front clamp that replaces the standard Pro seat clamp, along with a custom split headset spacer to ensure a clean and secure fit without interfering with internal cables. It also comes with a standard spacer and cable spreader, so the same Pro seat can be used on bikes with or without internal cable routing.
With more and more modern mountain bikes running cables through the headset, the ICR Adapter Kit helps families keep riding together — no matter how their bike is set up.
The Shotgun Pro ICR Adapter Kit retails for £22.99 and is available now from Kids Ride Shotgun or via your local Kids Ride Shotgun stockist.
FAQs about the Kids Ride Shotgun ICR Adapter Kit
What is internal headset cable routing (ICR)?
ICR is when your bike’s brake and gear cables are routed through the headset (the section where the fork meets the frame) instead of being run externally. It gives the bike a clean, streamlined look, but can cause challenges when fitting accessories like child seats.
Do I need the ICR Adapter Kit for my Shotgun seat?
You’ll only need the adapter if your bike has cables running through the headset. If your cables are routed externally (around the headset or frame), the standard Pro seat clamp will work as usual.
Is the Kids Ride Shotgun ICR adapter compatible with all ICR systems?
The adapter kit is compatible with most major ICR systems — but due to the variety of designs on the market, Kids Ride Shotgun can’t guarantee a fit for every setup. Check your bike’s spacers and compare them with the Shotgun Split Spacer shown above to ensure compatibility.
Do I need to disconnect my cables to install the ICR Adapter Kit?
Nope, there’s no need to touch your cables. Installing the ICR Adapter Kit is as simple as swapping the front clamp on your Pro seat, then removing a spacer from your bike and replacing it with the Pro Split Spacer.
Which Kids Ride Shotgun seats is the adapter compatible with?
The adapter is designed for the Shotgun Pro and Shotgun Pro EVO seats. It’s not needed for the original Shotgun front-mounted seat.
I have an older Pro seat. Will the adapter kit fit?
Yes, the adapter kit is suitable for all generations of the Shotgun Pro seat.
Do I still need 10mm of space on my headset to fit the ICR Adapter Kit?
Yes. The fitting requirements for the ICR Adapter Kit are the same as the standard Pro seat front clamp. Your bike must have a standard 1 1/8th steerer and 10mm of clearance on the stem.
I have two bikes, one with ICR and one without. Can I use the ICR Adapter Kit on both?
Yes. The ICR Adapter Kit includes both:
- a Split Spacer for your bike with internal cable routing (ICR)
- a One-Piece Spacer for your bike with a standard headset
That means you can easily move your Pro seat between both bikes.
It’s brilliant to see Kids Ride Shotgun responding to the way modern bikes are being designed and making sure families aren’t left behind.
By releasing this adapter, they’ve opened up their Pro seats to even more riders, meaning more little ones can enjoy the thrill of riding up front with mum or dad. Anything that helps families keep cycling together gets a big thumbs up from us!
