What’s hot in family cycling – June 2013
After months of waiting, the warmer weather has finally arrived – yes!!! Now is the time to make the most of the sunshine and get out riding the bikes with your kids.
Whether it’s weekend off road adventures, cycling to school during the week, or being inspired by the pros, there’s plenty going on in June to keep cycling families busy. So, without further ado, here’s the monthly Cycle Sprog round up of what’s hot in family cycling.
Bike Week 2013
Bike Week is the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, offering events around the UK. Taking place between 15th and 23rd June, Bike Week 2013 includes lots of events aimed at families and schools.
There’s family friendly rides, picnics and cycle shows taking place up and down the country. To find out what’s happening near you, visit the Bike Week website
It’s Father’s Day on Sunday 16th June. What better way to mark the occasion than with a cycling inspired gift? From books to bikes we’ve selected a few of our favourites gifts.
Since we wrote the cycling Father’s Day Gift Guide (which was before the sun showed up!), we’ve also spotted these best selling dhb Triple Lens Sunglasses, which are the perfect gift now summer has finally arrived.
Not only do these stylish cycling sunglasses offer 100% UVA and UVB protection, they come with ultra scratch-resistant polycarbonate lens and claim to be highly impact resistant. Perfect for when the kids get hold of them!
The dbh Triple Lens Sunglasses are available at Wiggle for £26.99
Bike to School Week 2013
This year Bike to School week (which is organised by the sustainable transport organisation Sustrans) is taking place the week before Bike Week 2013.
Between 10th and 14th June schools are being provided with lots of information to encourage cycling. There is also a chance for participating schools to win a prize worth £1000!
For more details of how your school can get involved, visit the Bike to School pages on the Sustrans website.
The 100th Tour de France
Sir Bradley Wiggins may have pulled out of the 2013 Tour de France, but there’s bound to be plenty of excitement to keep the kids entertained once the 100th Tour sets off on Saturday 29th June. Expect huge amounts of media coverage, in the year after the first ever British winner, as Chris Froome bids to make it two years in a row for Britain and Team Sky.
Last year kids sized yellow jerseys sold out before the end of the race, so grab one early this year if you’ve got a future stage winner in your family!
Tour de France kids sized Yellow Jerseys are due in stock from mid June at Wiggle Cycling, and will come in 5 different sizes suitable for ages 6 through to 14 years of age.
If you can’t wait that long, then there’s always Kids size Giro d’Italia Cycle Jerseys and lots of Team Sky look.
We’ve also been hunting out the best kids sized road racing bikes available, should you be faced with calls for a bike styled like the race leaders!

We’d love to feature other pregnancy cycling stories to help future mums decide if, when and how to ride during pregnancy and when their babies are young. If you’d like to feature in our series, please get in touch via our Contact Us page.
