Yesterday as I was cycling to work, I pulled up at a junction. Passing by was a mum with a pushchair, plus a little boy of about 4 walking beside her. He took one look at my bike (a filthy Trek hybrid used for year round commuting) and his face broke out into a beaming smile. He pointed enthusiastically at my grubby pedals and shouted at the top of his voice "Look Mummy - that's just like my bike!!!"
It was lovely to start my day, and set me remembering the days when my kids made that transition from balance bike to "real" bike with pedals. Suddenly being able to do "proper" cycling and looking so proud (and grown up) - along with the challenges of adapting our family cycle routes from ones we could do with bike seats and tagalongs to ones that little pedalling legs can cope with. I do hope that the little lad who lit up my morning continues to love cycling and get excited about bikes for many years to come.
