Best kids road bikes for Christmas 2017
With the growing popularity of road cycling, with British riders having success at the very highest level, we’re sure that Santa has had a huge number of requests for kids road bikes this Christmas! To help him out, the Cycle Sprog team have been busy collating our favourites and we’ve put together a present list of the best kids road bikes available in time for Christmas.
Please note though, that in order to get the best out of a road bike, your child does need to be a competent and confident cyclist, as they need to be able to ride safely using drop handlebars and skinny tyres. If they’re not quite ready, then a hybrid bike will give them much more fun.
P.S. If your young ones are keen mountain bikers then please pop over to our articles on Mountain Bikes for some great ideas! You may also want to check out our list of the 12 things you need to know before buying a kids bike.

It sparkles, it gleams and it’s ready to be ridden! The feeling of hopping on a new bike on Christmas Day is truly unforgettable, so here’s our selection of top kids road bikes for Santa to bring on the big day.
20″ Wheel Road Bikes
Frog Bikes are renowned for having taken the market by storm with their colourful top quality range of kids bikes. The Frog 58 is the introduction to the world of drop handlebar road biking fun and is a great bike for ages 6 and over (their inside leg measurement needs to be at least 58cm). Read our review of the Frog 58 here.
If the Frog 58 doesn’t quite hit the mark, then check out our other post on the best 20″ kids road bikes (warning – there aren’t that many in this smallest size!)
24″ Wheel Road Bikes
24″ wheels are where road bikes start to become more popular with young riders, aged between about 8 and 12 years (depending on their height).
From world beating track cyclist to creating a range of class leading kids bikes, Sir Chris Hoy delivers time and again with the Hoy Cammo being an excellent road bike for youngsters.
Scott Speedster Junior 24
With an alloy frame and many of the features of the adult ‘Speedster’, the Junior is a great bike for the younger road rider.
The 2018 Scott Speedster Junior 24 is available at Tredz.
If the Scott Speedster and Hoy Cammo aren’t quite what you’re looking for, then check out our article on 24″ wheel kids road bikes for more inspiration.
26″ wheel road bikes
The Islabikes Luath is technically a cyclo-cross bike, but it’s also great for riding on road too.
Available exclusively from Islabikes, the Luath is at the forefront of kids bike design, with extremely well designed geometry and junior sized components. It’s also available in 24″ and 700c wheel sizes.
700c Wheel Junior Road Bikes
This is when your child is at that transition phase – too big for most kids bikes, but not quite big enough for a fully blown adult one. Thankfully there are a few brands that realise there’s a need and have models to cater for this age group.
The Hoy Aomori Junior is named after the track in Japan where Chris Hoy won his first Keirin race. With a lightweight fork and aluminium frame, the Aomori has been matched to a Shimano Claris gearset and Microshift levers to provide a useable 16 speeds.
The Hoy Aomori Junior is available exclusively at Evans Cycles.
Wiggins Rouen Carbon Fork
This 700c wheeled bike from the Wiggins Kids Road Bike Range comes with 18 speeds courtesy of Shimano Sora derailleurs and shifters which is a good specification at this price point. A double butted aluminium frame is matched to a full carbon fork to give a bike that weighs around 9.2kg.
The Wiggins Rouen Carbon is currently on offer at Halfords for £400, which is a £50 saving on the normal price.
The Rouen is also available with a reduced specification, using Shimano Claris derailleurs, shifters and an alloy fork instead of the carbon option. This is currently available at Halfords for a reduced price of £335.
